Welcome

Watzup guys! Welcome to the Grade 8 blog spot. Suppose you're wondering what life's like for us Grade 8s (or 'newboys' as we're called by the senior grades) you couldn't have found a better place to uncover the latest news and information about our 1st year in Bishops College and more specifically, in White House. With the help of the weekly posts and pictures below, we hope you'll find - like we did - that White House is indeed a great home away from home (with a few surprises thrown in too)!

Myles Brown (another WH OD)
 in action on Wednesday

Wela (White House OD) representing
the Bishops OD Legends Team
Recently we had the inter house six-a-side hockey. Siya, Dakota, Seb and Chris represented our dorm. We unfortunately lost all our matches played. During the first match Seb unfortunately got injured. We all enjoyed the hockey. During the week the dorm went to Cavendish to spark up some dorm vibe. At Cavendish we had something to eat and went around the shops in a formal manner.  Chris has joined the AV Team that Tim is already in. Lastly this weekend we have some more inter house events. On Friday we are playing senior inter house hockey with Siya, Dakota and Leonardo playing. On Saturday we are playing inter house rugby. Good luck White House!

A Busy Week...

It’s been a very stressful and difficult week for us; we all had a massive maths self-study assignment to do. We’re up very late at night these days. Especially after last night, in which we had the White House Academic and Cultural Award Dinner. Llewellyn Shanjengange and Tim Jankovich were named the best academics in our dorm and Timmo also received a GCWH (General Contribution to White House) tie clip – a very prestigious reward. The rugby and hockey teams are especially amped for SACS this weekend.
Quote of the week – “The Grade 8s are looking especially big this year” Sebastiaan Hanekom.

The Past (Very Short) Week...

We recently had a long weekend because of Mother's Day but that didn't put a stop to some of our sportsmen in the dorm. Six rugby teams left for St. Andrews on Friday and we had Monday and Tuesday off school. In our dorm we had Siya, Seb and Cornel representing in Grahamstown. All the teams won except for the 2nd XV. The U14 As won 19-13 with Cornel scoring an excellent try. Ilyaas didn't play because he is fasting but we will see him in action in the last three games of the season. All of us enjoyed the long weekend as it was a nice break. Now we're preparing for our last few games of the Hockey and Rugby season and aiming to do so on a high note.

The Last Week...

Hello there. Here we are as promised still updating our Grade 8 blog page.

Ilyaas makes a mid-field break
On the weekend Seb Hanekom, Siya and Ilyaas played for the u14A rugby team who beat Kasselsvlei with a score of 51-12!

This week started off well with Dakota’s birthday on Monday, but then it turn serious. Monday night was Freddy’s last night at White House for at least a year... Although we savoured his last few hours on Tuesday morning, time flashed by and it was all too soon before his mum came to whisk him off to Germany. Missing you already Freddy!

Seb scores a great try
On Tuesday night Tim represented the dorm at the Bishops Classic Pops. He did a good job considering that he didn’t mess anything up. Pops was good but it was a little too long as it lasted 3 hours with only a 30 minute break.

Wednesday was a pretty ordinary day on which nothing special happened. Thursday was also an ordinary day, except that Ennio has been telling us that he has lost 20 pairs of his underpants in the laundry this week! Tim has lost some cash and we are still looking for Ennio’s calculator...

Seb Chisin got braces on Tuesday and Siya and Dakota have been going to gym, hoping to get big on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cornel, who is captain of the A team, broke his hand, nose and got concussed against ‘Bosch will start playing again this weekend against St Andrews in Grahamstown.

Start of the 3rd Term

Unfortunately we were very busy with academics, sport and other activities last term so we had less time to write about our activities each week on the blogsite. We know that is not a legitimate excuse so we are going to prevent it from not happening again and keep on rolling out the stories each week from now on onwards .

Rugby fever has definitely hit our dorm with a bang! Leonardo in the C team started the second week with a friendly match against Rondebosch beating them twice in a row. First with a score of 34- 12 and a second score of 31-5 with Leonardo scoring in the second game. We had the A and B teams play the under 15 B and C teams. We unfortunately lost with some injuries.

We are really looking forward to the POPS concert next week with Tim representing the dorm in the AV department. Its gonna be the biggest Jol ever!

Exams Around the Corner...

Exams are getting closer and closer and parents are always reminding us about us. The truth is for us they are far away. This week has been a busy week with the eisteddfod along with our homework and studying for the exams. The fact is that grade 8 is ‘chilled’ according to every other grade above us. The only person taking exams seriously is Tim whose made lots of notes. Eisteddfod has a dancing section so everyone in our grade tried out for it. Tim, Ennio and Ilyaas making it through. Ilyaas is A team rugby and plays Western Province Rugby, he also runs the 100m in 12.3 seconds. We were lucky to get him and enjoy his company as a dorm mate. Senior debating against Birt house was funny with Tshepo’s quote,’ Sit down boy.’ After the opposition speaker made an objection.

Our First Experience of School Gees

It’s been an awfully tiring week for us Grade 8s (but an awesome one nonetheless). On Thursday night we newboys had our first taste of the epic school gees during a tightly contested derby match against Rondebosch and Reddam when we watched our 1st Waterpolo Team pull through to victory in the Mizinta Cup at the Newlands Pool. IT WAS AMAZING! All four chukka’s had us on the edge of our seats. Chaba Jangulo and Dave van der Merwe (our Grade 11 role models) represented White House. This Friday we are playing Inter-house water polo, with Cornel and Leonardo representing the grade 8 dorm. Best of luck to the team! Until the next post, we’ve got the best newsboy’s in the school.

Hectic Week!

The Newboys have had yet another hectic week. The teachers have decided that the guys have had enough time to settle into college and are now hammering down hard on discipline and work. Take Friday for example: FOUR TESTS! Their system of group studying seems to have worked out for them though.

In the dorm, Tim has been absent for the entire week due to a nasty case of gastro. Our thoughts will be with the poor San Sister who has to deal with him!

The door to the newboy dorm has miraculously come off its hinges. There were no witnesses at the time so there are no leads to go on apart from the rumour that the ‘White House Ghost’ was involved.

P.S. Thank you to the anonymous person who returned Ennio’s lost pair of boxers. It really made his week!

House events have faded away over the past few weeks since Sports Day and inter house Cricket and we’ve all been representing our school in the various sports.

Our Experience So Far...

Our experience of Bishops this far has been an exciting and nerve wracking experience. The vibe in the dorm feels as if we have known each other for ages. The house has been very welcoming and also helped us set new standards for ourselves. As we join the White House family expectations are high and we will undoubtedly do our best to reach those expectations and even exceed them. For the boys that are new at the whole boarding experience it was a little weird, but as time goes by we are getting better at it. The rumours that we heard of boarding house food being bad we really haven’t experienced that this far and as a dorm we rather enjoy the food. For a lot of us Ms Dimbleby has been a great help for us and the other younger boys and she really adds a motherly touch to the house especially for those who miss their moms. The matrics have taken us on as little brothers and advised us on how we are expected to behave, but also explained all the ins and outs of boarding school to help us settle in as smoothly as possible.

The major highlight for all the boys in our dorm definitely had to be sports day; the atmosphere around the house and energy was amazing. The amount of spirit that the house has was a first for all of us we had never actually experienced anything like it. The never say die spirit that white house has will stick with us. Hopefully when we are in matric we can lead the house to victory.

For all the stressed and worried parents we are all cool and doing well, but most importantly we are enjoying white house and as the grade eight dorm we feel like we have made the right decision to join White House. We are exhausted, the food is grand, the matrics legends and we love it!
